Song Syntax in Bengalese finches: Neuro-physiological Mechanisms

 We are also trying to elucidate neural circuitry that enables song syntax in Bengalese finches. To do so, we use multi-single unit recording techniques. We hypothesize that functions of the brain nuclei involved in learning and production of the songs may be different between Bengalese and munias.

 We found that each of the three levels of neural structures that are related to song production has different properties of auditory processing. This might enable the hierarchical song production possible. Such data will eventually lead us to the understandings of linguistics hierarchy in human language.
