Degus: A Singing Rodent

Degus are a social rodent in South America. They are diurnal and they form small social communities. This species have keen senses of sight, hearing and a large repertoire of vocalizations.

Curiously, male Degus sing “love song” to females just like songbirds! Furthermore, they stack cups as human children do and make hierarchical “Chinese boxes.” By studying vocal communication and cognitive behavior in Degus, we hope to lean cues to understand how humans can put meaningful words together into language.
